It is common to see bees foraging for food and water around homes and other structures. Foraging bees are away from their hive and the remainder of the  colon.  These bees are just working, and not likely to sting because they have nothing to defend. Bees visiting plants, or water sources should be left undisturbed. To discourage foraging bees from gathering around a home or business, try and prevent access to attractants such as ripening fruit, opened soda cans and water sources.  Make sure your outdoor garbage receptacles are covered and well-sealed. Some flowers, and even non-flowering landscaping will attract foraging bees.  It is impractical to try to remove all the plants or water sources that might attract foraging bees so your best defense is to simply keep a wide berth. We can help you identify whether your bees are just foraging (visiting) or have an established colony or hive on your property.  Please call us for this free information.

During the early Spring months bees will “swarm”, that is, a group of thousands will split off from an existing hive, in search of a new location for the colony to establish a new hive.  A swarm of bees is often described as a “ball of bees” though it may not be shaped like a ball, it will consist of thousands of bees mounded together, mimicking the shape of a hive.  A swarm of bees may be traveling for several days in search of an area suitable to begin their new hive.  If you encounter a bee swarm, keep your distance.  Although a swarm is not yet protecting a hive, eggs, young bees or work product, it may still attack if it feels threatened.  A swarm of bees on your property may very quickly invade your structure through a gap or hole that you may not even be aware of.  Removing a swarm for relocation is our favorite bee removal task.  It is the least expensive service and ensures the bees can be safely relocated to a more suitable non populated area.

Throughout the year many of our clients notice a small number of bees moving in and out of an opening, sometimes just a tiny crack, into a structure which may be a tree, building or other object.  This is always the number one clue that you have a colony of bees residing within the structure.  A colony of bees, with a hive inside a structure will be laying approximately 1500 eggs per day and producing ponds of wax comb and honey.  This is a very serious problem that literally grows larger every day.  A colony of bees will act aggressively to protect the hive.  Do not attempt to seal them inside or use pesticides in an attempt to eradicate this problem yourself.  You will only compound your problem when trapped bees create an alternate exit from the space (sometimes into the building itself)  or the colony retaliates against the chemical.  It is virtually impossible to kill the number of bees you have within by using these products.  Additionally, your greater problem is that of the hive and debris that will still be within the space.

No matter the size or scope of your bee problem – we here at Bee Removal Pittsburgh can help.  Again, our advice and estimates are always free so call now before your bee problem grows out of control.

How do I find the right bee removal company? Here are some important questions to ask.

1. Do you have experience removing bees from a wall?

Removing honeybees from a wall requires carpentry experience. A novice beekeeper can cause more damage than good if they are not experts in carpentry.

2. What is the process of removing bees from a wall?

An experienced beekeeper will identify the location of the bees with an infrared camera, use a smoker to calm the bees, use a bee vacuum and other professional tools to remove the honeybees safely, extract the hive, clean the affected area, apply pesticide to deter honeybees from returning to the empty hive, fill the open area with insulation and replace the wall with the original material whenever possible.

3. Do you have pictures of honeybee removals from walls?

Trustworthy honeybee removal companies will have plenty of pictures. Choose a company that has more than just a few examples.

4.How long have you been a beekeeper?

Because there are many species of bees, a beekeeper must have extensive knowledge of the different techniques to safely and effectively remove the bees.

5. How long have you been in business?

Make sure they have a valid business license and have many years of experience in the bee removal field.

6. Do you have references?

A reputable bee removal company will have good ratings online on platforms such as Google. Be wary of businesses that have too few good reviews. It’s not unusual for novice companies to ask friends and family to create favorable reviews.

7. Do you guarantee your work?

Read the warranty or guarantee agreement carefully. A good bee removal company will warranty a removal requiring a repair for at least a year.

8. Do you have insurance?

Some companies operate with little or no insurance. Companies should have both liability and workman’s compensation insurance. This is a good precaution against accidents caused by bee smokers causing fires or beekeepers falling from roofs or trees.
